Be-Prepared-This-Summer-newWith summer fast approaching, it is important we and our pets are prepared for life’s unexpected events. Often our pets are forgotten or left behind in the hustle and bustle of an emergency. This can easily be remedied now by preparing a readily accessible “go bag” for your pet(s), making a plan for any possible situation, and staying informed of possible emergency situations. Your pets are an important part of the family and need to be included in your emergency plan.

Building a “go bag” is just as important for you as it is for your pet. Your pet’s basic needs for survival should be considered and included in their bag. These items should also be checked regularly to assure their quality and freshness. Some items you may want to consider are:

  • Food
  • Water bottles
  • Sanitary supplies such as wipes, bags and kitty litter for your feline friend
  • A first aid kit
  • A collar with ID tags and a leash
  • Medication (if needed)
  • A comforting blanket
  • A fun toy to keep your pet occupied
  • A copy of your pet’s recent medical records including vaccinations, microchip number and information regarding any pre-existing medical conditions
  • A recent photo

Making a plan is the next step towards being prepared and it is a big step for both you and your pet. Completing this step can lead to less stress, worry and difficulty the day of an emergency especially if your local officials ask you to evacuate or take shelter. With that said, it would only benefit you and your pet to practice your emergency plan. During the emergency drills, gather your pet’s “go bag” and practice taking shelter and evacuating your home. The more your pet becomes familiar with these procedures, the less stress they will experience during an emergency. A few things to consider though when designing your plan are:

  • Setting up an evacuation plan and route for your pet.
  • Organizing with friends and family so no one is left behind or forgotten.
  • Microchipping your pet well in advance and maintaining the information on said microchip.
  • Creating a list of emergency contacts which include local animal hospitals and shelters.

Staying informed of current conditions near you is often over looked as a step towards being fully prepared. It is imperative though that we stay current on local alerts and warnings by safety officials. By being aware of any possible emergency situations, we are afforded the time to gather necessary equipment such as our pet’s “go bag” and position our pet’s to be ready to evacuate or shelter.

This summer keeping your pet safe and prepared should be the goal in honor of National Pet Preparedness Month for June. Our pets are part of the family and no one should be left behind or forgotten in any family. So, please take a moment to prepare for the unexpected.
